Is God Like Chicago?
I've heard it said that Chicago is the town that never sleeps. That's where I was living when my son had his accident and I had to fly out of O'Hare back to Louisiana to be with him. I can agree that the town never sleeps, there is always something going on no matter what time of day or night. One of my friends said I loved Chicago so much because for the first time in my life I lived in a city that had as much energy as me. Lol. I have no argument.
In the second part of Psalm 121:3, the psalmist says that the One who watches over us doesn't sleep. As a parent, I can relate in that I loved to watch my babies sleep. Chris is 40 now, and I still offer up a huge sigh of contentment when I see he is resting well. I'm pretty sure God watches us while we sleep too - and He watches when we don't get the benefit of sleeping. Can my caregiver friends relate? Raise a hand!
In my vivid imagination, I think God is hovering over me while I'm snoozing. Maybe, just maybe He smiles as He sees me breathe in and out - knowing that His breath that is sustaining me today is the same one He breathed into Adam in the beginning. The breath of the One who made Adam a "living soul" is still keeping me alive today. He's still watching over His children.
God never sleeps on the job. He just keeps watching over our souls. Day or night. Hard times or easy times. (Not sure what those are.. lol) When I'm confused, battle-worn, tossed, messed up, or exhausted - God is right there watching over my soul. I'm so thankful He doesn't give up on me when I feel like such a mess.
Today, I will remind myself that God has not moved from watching over me. He won't look away or be distracted and He has my soul's best interest at heart. In fact, He has me in His heart and it's not going to change today. My meditations will be on how He is still in my here - no matter how it changes or what it looks like at the end of the day. The Creator, the only true God, He is the one watching over me and watching out for my soul today. I can trust Him with my today - will you join me?
