Measuring Circumstances?

Chris and I at Overholser Lake

Somehow, we have to trust that we are in the right spot right now. That may sound like a funny way to start a devotion for caregivers, but stay with me! I've been looking at several scriptures over the last few days where God used totally normal everyday things to do extraordinary - supernatural miracles.

God has been interacting in the lives of ordinary people all along. We see it all through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, from creation to the final vision. And oddly enough (tongue in cheek), He is still working in the lives of ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

Maybe we aren't seeing what most would call huge miracles - our loved ones completely restored to health would be nice. But sometimes the most miraculous is that God walks with us through time. He's there in good times, bad times, difficult times, long sleepless nights, and too bright early morning lights. It's easy to discount our lives as mundane. But God walks with us. That makes our lives exceptional.

Just because we are in some pretty sticky (caregiving-related) circumstances, doesn't mean we are missing out on God's best. We are in a spot where He will meet us - and that makes all the difference. I was thinking about Moses this morning and all he went through. But God kept setting Moses up for divine encounters all along the way.

He killed an Egyptian and fled Egypt to live on the backside of the desert. But God met him there in the burning bush. It wasn't too dry, too hot, or too desolate for God! God sent Moses back to Egypt to get His people, where Moses witnessed the 10 plagues and a mighty deliverance at God's hand. But that wasn't the end of the story.

He's got hundreds of thousands of people following him when he runs right into the Red Sea. Then, they look up to see Pharoah's army pressing in on them from behind. That's truly behind a rock and a hard spot! But they hadn't disobeyed God. They didn't lack faith. They hadn't ignored what God said - as a matter of fact - they had followed God right into the situation. But God had a plan.

I have to think when my life feels like I live between hard spots and in deeper spots that God still has a plan. And He does. His plan is always to meet us. He doesn't measure the twists and turns of life to see if He wants to participate. He chooses beforehand to meet us and walk with us through time - no matter what it brings.

Today, I'll remind myself that God is right here, right now, in this moment walking life out with me. My thoughts will be on how He remains here with me no matter what. I'll also remind myself that things going badly, or other than how my mind planned it don't indicate a lack of faith or trust in God. God is in our circumstances with us. That's why I choose to trust Him for one more day - will you join me?

31 Days in Psalm 31

cover of 31 Days in Psalm 31

David was open and honest about his feelings and he tended to give everything to God, even when he was hiding in the back of a cave. What's it like to spend time in the back of a cave with God? David gives us a glimpse in Psalm 31 and that's where this devotional is taken from. Grab a paper copy or a Kindle copy from Amazon!
