All Kinds of Spaces

chris in the front seat of our new car

I was preparing for my FaceBook live devotions this morning, and I had this thought about the Psalms. The 150 Psalms were written by several people, including Moses, David, Asaph, and the Sons of Korah. It's the only book in the Bible that has multiple authors. The writers of the Psalms have varied backgrounds. Moses led the Children of Israel out of Egypt and across the wilderness.

The Sons of Korah were with Moses on the journey through the wilderness, except that Korah got eaten up by God's earthquake when he rebelled. I'd say that his sons had an understanding and appreciation for God's grace after that big event!

Asaph was a lead worshiper in the Tabernacle. He was a gifted and talented musician who saw a whole different perspective of God.

Then there's David. He wrote from the perspective of a shepherd (Psalm 23), from the back of the cave (Psalm 31), and from the palace. He wrote while he was running from Saul. He also wrote a psalm or two, repenting for his sin with Bathsheba.

Man, that's a broad set of circumstances, isn't it? But no matter who was writing, the declared God was faithful. God was with them in the wilderness, the cave, the victories, the losses, facing giants, and even after they sinned. He never gave up on them and they all declared God as trustworthy and faithful.

As caregivers, we have diverse situations, too, even though we are taking care of a loved one. We can look at the background of the Psalms and their writers and see that God was woven into every emotional outburst, every prayer of thanksgiving, and every single circumstance the psalmist wrote about. He is woven into our circumstances too. And He's still faithful...we can count on it.

If we feel like we are in an emotional, barren wilderness - He's there with us.

When we are burdened with the responsibilities and choices for the day - He's there for us.

When we are encouraged with good news or help (what's that?) - God is still there. He doesn't take time off when things go right for a breath or two. lol.

He is still faithful. He is still present. He is still our strength, our stronghold, our redeemer. He didn't quit when we became caregivers. I think He actually moved in a little closer to close the emotional gap left by our "friends" who left.

Today, I will purposefully praise and thank God for His continued faithfulness in all my little spaces. I'll meditate on how He remains when the world walks away. My thoughts will be on how He is not deterred when I move to the back of the cave. (You know we all do it!) I will quiet my anxious soul today and look to Him to sustain me through today. I can trust Him for one more day - will you join me?
