God's Still Good

Me helping Chris stand outside at a park

One of my pet peeves is how people like to say, "God is good," when they get what they want. But what about when we don't get what we want? What about those times that life throws big rocks in our paths and we spend the rest of our years dodging and climbing over them? What about when our prayers didn't get the answer we wanted or our loved one wasn't spared in a tragic accident? Guess what. God is still good.

His goodness does not fluctuate with our circumstances. Our situations may be dire at times. Difficult at times (all the time). We may be faced with unsurmountable problems - or at least they feel that way. But God is still good. I'll be the first to admit that I have been angry with God who didn't step in like I thought He should. And He didn't do what I thought He should. He was good enough to handle my anger and my heart, too. He's just good like that!

God's goodness isn't measured by anything that happens on earth - in time. It's an eternal characteristic that will never change.

I was reading in Psalm 100 this morning. David's psalm of thanksgiving was written long before the American holiday! Lol. He is encouraging his readers (or listeners) to give God thanks, praise Him, and bless His name. Why? According to verse five:

  • God is good...eternally
  • God's mercy knows no end..forever
  • God's faithfulness endures to every single generation that will exist throughout all time!
I'd say that's some pretty good reasons to praise and thank God. We can be certain that none of His attributes or qualities changed when we became caregivers. There are no exclusionary statements either - God is good - except for ___? God is faithful unless ___? Nope! Not one exclusion. It's just up to us to look past our circumstances and situations to get a glimpse of His mercy, His faithfulness, and His goodness.

Today, I will remind myself that God did not get off His throne in heaven when my world fell apart 16 years ago. I'll turn my thoughts to how faithful He has been on this caregiving journey. I'll be thankful that He has chosen to walk it with me and that it never has gotten too ugly for Him to participate. I will remain thankful that He remains with me no matter what. And I will be committed to trusting Him with one more day. Will you join me?
