Human Help?

A verse in Psalm 108 caught my eye this morning. It starts with a question that was interesting. David asks, Have You rejected us, O God? He seemed to ask this type of question a lot. I don't think it's a lack of faith. Actually, it's a display of great faith and delayed answers. I can't tell you how many times I've wondered where did God go? In my heart, I know that He is still right here and that He is with me.

Gideon asked a similar question too. (Judges 6) If God is with us then why... Things happening don't make God go away. However, our circumstances can be so in our faces that we cannot see Him. It's even very easy to see the enormity of our situations so that we can't quite see around them to find Him. I think God gets that. We are silently reaching for Him around our stuff - and He is always right there.

David was able to move on from this momentary struggle - that most likely felt like a forever struggle. And he begs God in verse 12, Please help us against our enemies for all human help is useless. In this phrase, David is asking for God's help. He acknowledges that it will do him no good to go gather more soldiers. David didn't want to recruit more and grow his own army. Instead, he was saying that God being with him and his men would make the winning majority! Isn't this true in our situations too?

Sure human help is good - if it exists. Lol. But how much more strength does God's help put into our souls? Human help comes and goes. For me, sometimes I have it - most times I don't. We just press on. But God's help is eternal, continuous, and always present. Reminds me of Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble. Amen!

It seems that David settled down after his desperate prayer, because in verse 13 he says, With God's help we can do mighty things, for He will trample down our foes. David had physical, real life, flesh and blood enemies. Most of the time, our enemies are unseen. Fear. Doubt. Weariness. Grief. Loss....we could go on and on and build an exhaustive list. But it doesn't matter - God's always leads us into triumph through Christ. (2 Corinthians 2:14)

Today, I will remind myself that God has planned my victories. My meditations will be on how He leads me into triumph - I just need to follow Him closely. I'll direct my thoughts back to His ever-abiding presence each time my heart wants to grow weary today. My thoughts will be on how He planned for me to win the battles in my soul today - before today ever got here. I will trust Him to keep my soul and bring me into victory for one more day. Will you join me?
