Fear Faith and Freedom
God sent two Josephs to Egypt. In the Old Testament, Joseph was betrayed and sold into slavery by his own family. A famine drove Joseph's family to Egypt to survive, and they dwelt there for 400 years. Fear caused horrible slavery. Pharoah was afraid that they were getting too big and too strong, and the oppression began until it turned into full-blown slavery.
We often associate Egypt with oppression, fear, bondage, and slavery because of the dark years God's people spent there.
But in Matthew, God sent Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus to Egypt to protect them from Herod, who wanted to kill the baby who was destined to become king. Of course, it was all a misunderstanding because Jesus wasn't going to set up an earthly kingdom by dethroning the fleshly king. Again, fear brought adverse circumstances.
As caregivers, we can deal with fear in many different arenas. For me, if I fear something, it's getting older and not being able to care for my son, who needs total care. But we can also deal with fear regarding finances, our own health, and plenty of other scenarios.
Fear brought both Josephs to Egypt. But in Matthew, the place we often associate with bondage, darkness, and slavery became the refuge for Joseph's little family. God provided a safe place in the most unlikely place of Egypt. I'm pretty sure, either way, God had His people covered, and it comes down to trusting Him no matter what.
Caregivers can deal with fear. With darkness. With bondages. We could each one make an exhaustive list of the wide range of emotions and feelings we deal with every day. But God has got us. He may be riding into Egypt to set us free from emotional entrapment. Or He may be taking us to Egypt to separate us from the dangers of life. No matter what - He's got just what we need!
Today, I will ultimately trust God for all the whatevers that may come. Whether I want to run away or I feel entrapped, I will remind myself that He has me covered and He's got just what I need to make it through this day. My goal for today is to stay connected and close to Him and to listen for His slightest hints for direction. No matter what I feel, I'll remind myself that He has got me on His mind and in His heart - so I can trust Him for one more day. Will you join me?
