Flight of the Bumblebee

Chris at Bluff Park Trails

If you look at a musical piece, you may notice the key signature. It provides all you need to know about how the piece should be played. It indicates the key the piece is written in, the tempo, and the time signature. If you've listened to any classical music, you've probably heard the Flight of the Bumblee. The musical notes are played in such a way that it makes you think of the way bumblebees fly and flit around quickly.

The notes, played quickly by skillful musicians, seem to fly from the instrument out into the air as fingers fly across the instrument to create this audible illusion. It's a fun piece - but it is fast. That's because the key signature for Flight of the Bumblebee indicates a tempo of 94 bpm and a time signature of 3 beats per bar. That's a note and a half played each second! It can be a fun piece to play and to watch be played, for sure.

I heard the song last night as it was used in a movie my son and I were watching together. So, it piqued my interest in how fast it is actually being played. Turns out that's pretty fast! Lol. As I watched the musicians keeping up that tempo and the sounds registered in my ears as fast as it was being played, I let out a sigh. I feel like this symbolic bumblebee most days! Do you relate?

My efforts at organization are futile some days. I try using a to-do list, but I find the day is so busy I don't always mark things off before I'm pressed to get to the next two or three things that have to be done. It can be a bit crazy around here. Even yesterday, I thought it would be easier since the nurse from home health was coming on the same day as the doctor. On one hand, it was. Knocked them both out in a day and won't see either of them for at least two weeks. But it sure made yesterday hectic. I'm not sure it was worth the trade-off.

Even on calmer days (however we may measure that!), it seems like my thoughts and emotions are still flitting around like that pesky bumblebee. I'm sitting still, drinking coffee or ginger tea, most likely. But my mind is darting from one thing to another faster than I can even keep up with myself. whew! It's no wonder caregivers are worn out and wiped out before the end of the day. But of course, we do not have the option of just stopping because we are tired. We just keep going like the energizer bunny. Why? There are too many things that have to be done each day and then, there are always a few surprises that pop up that need our attention.

I love that God doesn't find our days as dizzying as we do. maybe He does look down and see us flying from one thing to the next. And, of course, He sees our souls trying to keep up and be positive and trust Him each second of every day. I imagine that He knows our souls better than we do! He gets us. And for that - this bumblebee-like caregiver is so very grateful.

Today, I'll be thankful that my hectic schedule, crazy lifestyle, and goofy, overthinking soul don't scare God away. I will take some time today to just thank Him for sticking around when it feels like most have walked away. My meditations will be on how He patiently walks with me through this life that looks like the chaotic flight pattern of a bumblebee, and carries me as needed. I'll be thankful that He gets me even when it's nuts and I'm acting nuts - and that He chooses to know me and hang out with me. That's how I know I can trust Him for one more day - will you join me?
