Straight Into the Unkowns

Aunt Polly talking to Chris

I'm pretty sure most of us didn't grow up with aspirations of being caregivers. We certainly didn't know our life's journey would take so many twists and turns. But here we are. For each of us, our caregiving journey is different, but most of us started out at zero. We didn't know what to do or how to do it.

When I first brought my son home, I was so nervous and afraid I would hurt him. I'd literally get sick to my stomach each time I had to transfer him. I had seen people transfer him, and I finally had a bit of training when he was in therapy for a couple of weeks just before I brought him home. But I was still scared. It was the deep unknown for me!

It wasn't much easier when I first started transitioning him to a blenderized diet. I had only known formula, but I decided to give it a try. Fearfully. Cautiously. It was certainly the unknown.

Our whole journey is about walking into the unknown. We probably do it a lot more than we realize at this point. There's no time to waste; we need to get things done. Right? If you are like me, the tendency is to just roll up our proverbial sleeves and get 'er done. Turns out we are in good company.

There are so many Bible stories about our heroes who went charging into the unknowns. Moses had no clue what the wilderness held for him and the children of Israel. But he kept putting one foot in front of the other and trusting God for the journey. He dealt with one thing at a time - God didn't transport them to Canaan: He walked the entire journey WITH them. Each day was a miracle.

Sometimes, I think it would be easier if God would just snap His fingers and make all the difficult parts go away. But God has never done that. What He has done all throughout time is be the God who is present in trouble. He doesn't avoid it; He makes a way through it.

God told Isaiah that when he passed through the waters, He would be with him. When Isaiah would go through the rivers, they wouldn't overflow him. When Isaiah would walk through the fire, he wouldn't be burned. There are never any promises that we won't have struggles, trials, or problems. In fact, there are promises that we will have them. But we also have His promise that He'll be with us through all of them.

Today, as we face the unknowns, may we lean in toward God's heart a little closer. I will take comfort in knowing that He is there to lean on when things go a bit crazy. I'll be grateful that He is right here with me in the middle of life's storm. Just like we choose to be with our loved ones and care for them, God chooses to be with us. I'm so glad He will not abandon or have "better" things to do with His "time." I believe I can trust Him to be here with me for one more day. Will you join me?
