2 Hearts in 1
Luke 7:36-49 recounts the story of the woman who washed Jesus' feet with her tears. Jesus had been invited to the home of a Pharisee to share a meal. The woman, who has no name, like the woman at the well, was called "a sinner." We can fill in the blank as to what her "sin" was, but it can go unsaid. In verse 48, Jesus says her sins plural were forgiven. We can assume she led a rather interesting life, which Jesus did not condemn, but the Pharisee did.
One thing that stood out to me this morning as I was reading this passage was how different the two hearts were. The woman came to Jesus and never said a word. She poured expensive, fragrant oil on His head and began to weep at his feet. She cried so many tears that she began to dry His feet with her tears. Somehow, this woman of ill repute knew Jesus heart to heart. Even if she couldn't put it into words, and maybe hadn't even been taught it, Isaiah 52:7 was real to her. (How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!)
Jesus heard her heart.
On the other hand, we have a pious Pharisee. He didn't forbid the woman to come but it says in verse 39 that when he saw her, he said to himself... Even though he didn't say it out loud, he thought that if Jesus were really a prophet, He'd know "what kind of woman" this was.
Jesus heard his heart, too.
To address the thoughts of the Pharisee, Jesus shares a parable about two debtors being forgiven of all they owed. Who will love the master more? The one who had more debt forgiven. Then He forgives the woman and tells her to go in peace after acknowledging her faith. Interesting that He didn't acknowledge the faith of the Pharisee.
Here's what I took away from this passage today. God hears our hearts. There are so many things we cannot put into words. Even if we try, it can be dismissed as whining or complaining. As a result, we often suffer silently. No one gets our journey. Maybe no one even wants to. So we sit quietly with tears staining our faces and wonder what happened to our lives and how we arrived here alone.
Jesus hears our hearts.
Today, I will remind myself that God hears my heart. He knows the brokenness and pain that I can't quite get into words for humans to understand. God gets everything behind my deepest sighs and uncried tears. My goal for today is to open my heart more to His presence and to be open to Him seeing all that is in my heart, even the parts I can't adequately express. I purpose to trust Him more with my heart and to trust Him with more of my heart. Will you join me?
