Just Enough

Chris and my daddy

We talked yesterday about how God provided for Elijah and how He had commanded the ravens to feed the prophet by the brook. Then, He commanded a widow to take care of Elijah. I have been thinking about what it was like from her side. As usual, I have questions. Like, did she know God commanded her to take care of Elijah? Did she know Elijah was headed over for supper? Or had God commanded the meal and oil to be "enough?" Hmmm. Lots to think about.

The widow didn't seem to know. She explained to Elijah that she had just enough to feed her son and herself and then she planned to die.(I Kings 17:12) What a plan! Lol. As a caregiver, I've had a few of those "well, this is it" moments. Have you?

Elijah goes on to tell her to make him a "small" cake first, then provide for her and her son. He explains that God has blessed her flour and oil and they will not run out until it begins to rain again. (And again - at God's command.) But I wonder how many questions were going through her mind as she made Elijah that first little cake. Did she wonder if he was lying to her just to get a meal? What did she have to lose? Lol. Been there a time or two, how about you?

It's the touch of God that makes our just enough more than enough. She had just enough to make a cake, and from that she made three. After that, she had exactly what she needed to make it through the famine. I think we can understand some of the emotions she must have had to work through. Did she keep looking over at her son while she made that first cake for the prophet? Did she wonder if she'd have enough left to make a cake for her son and she would go without? You know she'd have done that if necessary!

Was she surprised when she went back to her flour bin and saw there was still enough to make all the cakes she needed for God-invited guest and her son and herself? Over and over, the oil never dried up, and the flour never ran out. She had just enough to carry her through the famine! What a great miracle!

Today, I can trust God for just enough. Isn't that what He told Paul when he asked about his infirmity? My grace is enough. It is still enough today - and it will continue to be enough for every single one of our struggles, problems, worries, sicknesses.... fill in the blank! God's got enough to cover us today and I plan on trusting Him for it. Will you join me?
