Vulnerable?

I've been working on part two of my Command Your Morning devotional. This one is focused solely on Psalm 119. This psalm is a great read! It's long, but it's rich. I have worked through the first couple of sections, but then I hit verses 25 to 32. It seems to shift a bit, while still focused on the Word. This psalm is all about trusting the word, longing for the word, needing the word, following the word, and clinging to it.

But it seems that in verse 25, the psalmist lets his emotions out a bit. He says, My soul clings to the dust. (NKJV) In the NLT, it is translated this way: I lie in the dust, completely discouraged. In verse 28, he says, I weep with grief. Well, that got my attention. Of course, David is baring his soul and seeking God's word for healing and direction. Why? Because David learned that when life gets harder, overwhelming, and difficult, it's time to lean in to the word for comfort, direction, and wholeness. He is totally vulnerable in his need for and trust in God and His word.

Yesterday, we talked about asking God questions. We discovered that it was another layer or level of trust to ask him about deep soul things. We also know that He gets us. (I'm so thankful!) He gets every pain behind the hard questions. He gets every emotion behind our tears, even the ones that don't fall. I love that about God.

So here in these few verses, David is expressing his heartfelt feelings and deepest emotions. But he is also asking for God's help in the middle of the circumstances. When David (and other Bible heroes of the faith) made themselves vulnerable before God, He never told them to go get themselves together and come back later.

God never turns away open, real, honest, and raw emotions. It demonstrates such a high level of trust that many people do not understand. It makes me do some soul-searching. I must ask myself once again, do I trust God enough to be totally vulnerable before Him?

When we do, He meets us right where we are. He doesn't tell us to wash our faces, wipe our noses, and come back when we are more presentable. NO! He meets us right there in our ugly cry! And He brings all the comfort and healing that He is right into our circumstances. I love that about God!

Today, I'll remind myself that God is right here, right now. He is with me, and He's not going to find something better to do with His time. He will sit with me. He will hold me. He will comfort me to the degree that I will let Him. I think I will choose to be completely vulnerable with my emotions today, and I'll remind myself He really can handle it as I trust Him with one more day. Will you join me?
