No More Borrowing!
Jesus provides us some insights on anxiety in Matthew 6:25-34. I've used this passage to calm my soul many times. When I hear birds singing outside my window, I think of verse 26. He takes care of the birds, so He takes care of me! The birds singing remind me of His watchful care over my soul, and as long as they are singing, He's still providing care!
As I was reading this passage the other day, I stopped to meditate on verse 34. Jesus reminds us to not worry about tomorrow. He says that tomorrow will take care of itself. And I love that He says each day has enough trouble. If anyone understands that, it's the caregiver, for sure!
We have enough on our plate for today, at least I do, anyway! Why would I want to borrow worries and trouble from tomorrow before anything has even happened?
As caregivers, the future can be troubling. We may worry about our loved one's declining health or increased need for care. Maybe it's a concern that as we age we won't be able to care for our loved ones. We can go into tomorrow and draw lots of things to worry about. We start drawing on faith, and don't even know what we need it for, because those things haven't even happened yet.
Of course, we want to prepare for the future as best as we can. Scripture is pretty clear about preparations, and we have many stories to consider. Joseph was given the plan 7 years in advance. God told him there was a famine coming and then gave him the wisdom to prepare.
Jesus tried His best to prepare the disciples for the crucifixion and the days ahead. I'm not sure they really got it until it happened, and they could look back and process it all. But He tried.
We should prepare; that's wisdom. But we don't need to borrow worries from tomorrow, from things that may or may not even happen. We process, we plan, we pray, and we trust. We use wisdom. But we don't borrow!
I don't know about you, but it takes a lot out of me to just trust Him for one day at a time! And that is all He is asking us to do.
Today, I will calm my soul and remind myself that I will trust Him one day, one step at a time. I won't borrow worries from tomorrow. I will trust that He will guide me in preparing for the days ahead! I'll also use wisdom, knowing that today's decisions affect our tomorrows. But instead of worrying, I'll trust He will provide wisdom and guidance each step of the way. He's got me today and I chose to be content with that. This journey is just a series of days where we have continued to trust Him. Today is no different, and I will trust Him with it. Will you join me?
