The Balance Beam
Yesterday, we looked at Matthew 11:28 and how Jesus seemed to understand when we are fatigued, heavy, tired, and carrying a huge load. As I was camping in these verses, I realized I'd always had a mental block with Jesus' next statement.
In verse 28, He says to come. He says He will give us peace. But in verse 29, Jesus says, take My yoke on you. I admit that has never made any sense, because a yoke seems like a bondage, at least to an ox. Lol. So, I did a little digging in my handy-dandy Strong's Concordance app.
In the Greek, "yoke" is zugos. It does mean to join as with a yoke. It also means a coupling, or the beam of balance (as connecting the scales), a pair of balances yoke. I actually got it!
When we yoke up with Him, the load immediately balances out and our load becomes lighter because He starts carrying it with us! Jesus goes on to say that His yoke is easy. His burden is light. We'll feel no affect of sharing the burden with Him, because His doesn't weigh much. But He takes all of ours!
I have found a new love for these verses! God is so wise. Not only does He get us and what we are carrying, but He takes what we bring to the mix and balances it out by carrying it for us - when we choose to "yoke" up or connect with Him. I love that about Him!
Today, I will remind myself that He's got me covered. I'll think about how when I come to Him and choose to walk alongside Him, He takes the burden and gives me the lighter load. My thoughts will be on how this load shift makes my journey so much easier. Knowing that He is walking alongside me to carry my worries, my pain, my struggles, and my burdens makes this day a whole lot lighter! I believe I can walk with Him and trust Him for one more day. Will you join me?
